Brazil vs India – go with the flow

15 05 2013

Some things are just too good to be true.  While finishing off the cataloging of recordings that ARC collected for Brazilian Music Day, in preparation for India Music Week, I came across this album by Egberto Gismonti.

gismonti_smlest

It’s the perfect transition – the perfect bridge between the two cultures and the annual focuses here at the ARC.  Last year Brazil, this year India.  Força Lascada (EMI, Brazil, 064 422 940, 1984) offers a jazzy and dissonant use of a dilruba and the “sitara” – untuned, loung-ey and peculiar – as nearly all such cultural mashups are.

It’s the perfect addition to the collection we’re building of non-Indian musicians incorporating Asian Indian instruments into their music. Often it’s a straight ahead and flatly melodic use, like on a Beatles record.  But sometimes it’s an avant-garde mess bordering on genius.  As this is.  At least on two cuts.

We’ll have a full rundown and essay on more than 30 of these recordings ready for India Music Week in Oct.  Stay un-tuned!

AS YOU MAY KNOW our Swingin’ Summer Record + CD Sale is coming up – June 8 – 16.  So another benefit of re-Brazilin’ is the big pile of Brazilian/Brasilian LPs that we will have at our sale.  Things in near mint condition, like below @ below market prices…

Sale-ers Delight

25 10 2012

Here’s a pic of Suresh, collector extraordinaire and my erstwhile record guide to the Chor Bazaar (Thieves Market).  Easy to find the record salers here, not just the well-spelled signage, but by the dangling discs. Here’s a few more finds from Chor and from a dealer in the arcade in Fort.  The top two are really my top 2, spanning our ‘Days.”  The Armaan-ies do a Hindi-samba, referencing our last Brazilian Music Day, and the S+Sers cover ABBA, spanning 2013’s Indian and 2014’s Scandinavian Days.  Who could ask for anything more?

70 Years From NOW!

8 08 2012

     VS

Yesterday Sandra Coutinho from Globo News did an interview here with Beco and B. about Brazilian Music Day.  One thing we showed them was a copy of Saludos Amigos, an album of songs from the Disney film of 1942.  This ‘album’ (three single discs in one wrapper) contains the Ary Barroso song “Aquarela do Brasil”  (Watercolors of Brazil, Decca Records, A-369 ).  This is probably the very first authentic Brazilian song that anyone in America ever heard, and was the first Brazilian song to be played a million times on Stateside radio.

We played the recording and all were struck by how vivid and clean the sound of this 78rpm shellac (that’s insect resin) disc from 1942 was.  And here’s the question: Will your songs on your i-phone or MP3 player sound good in 70 years…
